Gender, Affect and Intertemporal Consistency: An Experimental Approach

چکیده
Gender, Affect and Intertemporal Consistency: An Experimental Approach We conduct experiments in which participants made multiple intertemporal decisions throughout a seven week period. In addition to exploring dynamic consistency and the stability of single period discount rates, our experiments introduce a manipulation to identify the role of positive and negative mood/affect in intertemporal choice. Our results demonstrate that, while individuals’ single period discount rates are stable over time, there is evidence of dynamic inconsistency. While we find no differences in the discount rates of men and women, we find gender differences in the character of hyperbolic discounting in which women display greater patience in their “present bias.” We also identify a gender-mood interaction: Negative mood in women yields increased impulsiveness while inducing positive affect in women or affect (positive or negative) in men yields little change. The aim of this article is to describe the evolution of a very dynamic theory: the theory of intertemporal choice. I present the first economic thinking on intertemporal decision-making, and expose how it resulted in Samuelson’s famous discounted utility model; then I describe how and why discounted utility became the standard approach to intertemporal choice in economics through the alleged no...
متن کاملInvestigation on Habit Formation, Risk Aversion and Intertemporal Substitution in Consumption of Iranian Households by GMM Approach
Consumption is the principal feature of Iranâs Gross National Production. Therefore, recognizing of factors that influence it is quite crucial. This article, investigates habit formation, durability, relative risk aversion and intertemporal substitution in consumption expenditures of Iranian households. For empirical study, at first, we constructed two weighted portfolio of the main assets re...
متن کاملThe Structure of Intertemporal Preferences under Uncertain Lifetime
Does experimental evidence of the common difference effect imply that intertemporal preferences are time inconsistent? Do these features of choice suggest inherent characteristics of preferences, or could they be traced to an underlying factor that shapes the environment? The effect of uncertain lifetime on intertemporal preferences is studied. A demographic model that allows for unobservable h...
متن کاملAxiomatization and Measurement of Quasi-hyperbolic Discounting*
This article provides an axiomatic characterization of quasi-hyperbolic discounting and a more general class of semi-hyperbolic preferences. We impose consistency restrictions directly on the intertemporal trade-offs by relying on what we call ‘‘annuity compensations.’’ Our axiomatization leads naturally to an experimental design that disentangles discounting from the elasticity of intertempora...
متن کاملAn Analysis the Effect of Capital Taxation on Allocation of Resources: A Dynamic Equilibrium Model Approach
Abstract T he return of capital is fundamental to the intertemporal allocation of resources by changing the consumption behavior and capital accumulation over time. Taxation on return of capital increases the marginal product of capital, meaning that capital stock is lower than when capital is not taxed, which results decreased growth and welfare in steady state. This pape...
